The markets have had a fairly uneventful day so far in the absence of any meaningful economic news. There were existing home sales released earlier (in the US) but these came in pretty much as expected at 4.68m.

So after an hour of trading in the US and as we approach the close of the European markets, many of the stock markets are little changed. The Dow Jones is just 9 points lower at 8464 whilst the S&P 500 is unchanged at 911 and the Nasdaq, which is the best performer so far today, is up 11 at 1762.

In Europe the FTSE 100 is down 4 points at 4407 whilst the DAX is unchanged at 4985 and the CAC 40 is up 10 at 3280.

So nothing much to report there and it’s a similar story on the commodity markets with gold trading just $3 lower at $950 and crude oil trading close to it’s opening levels at $62.54.

On the forex markets the GBP/USD climbed above the 1.60 mark earlier today but has since fallen back to 1.5994 whilst the EUR/USD failed to push through the 1.40 mark and is currently around 100 points lower at 1.3900. The euro has also weakened against the pound today as we have seen the EUR/GBP fall around 90 points to 0.8690.
