After a few positive trading sessions the markets have been relatively neutral today, which is unsurprising really. The markets could easily have pushed higher after better than expected housing figures but they have actually fallen slightly since these figures were released and are now pretty much unchanged.

With less than an hour to go until the closing bell the Dow Jones is currently down 17 points at 8899 whilst the S&P 500 is 1 point higher at 956 and the Nasdaq is up 9 points at 1926.

In Europe the FTSE 100 couldn’t quite manage to close above the crucial 4500 level but still finished 12.56 points higher at 4493.73. Elsewhere the DAX finished 27.59 points higher at 5121.56 whilst the CAC 40 closed 2.18 points higher at 3305.07.

On the currency markets the GBP/USD and EUR/USD pairs traded lower for much of today’s session but in recent hours they have both bounced back and now stand at 1.6467 and 1.4228 respectively.

Finally it’s been a quiet day on the commodity markets with the price of gold holding steady above the $950 level at $953 and the price of oil remaining relatively unchanged at $65.05.
